Finasteride + Minoxidil

Finasteride blocks the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, the hormone that shrinks hair follicles in male pattern hair loss. Lower DHT slows the miniaturization and, in many men, lets follicles recover. Minoxidil works from a different direction: it widens the small blood vessels around the follicle and lengthens the growth phase of the hair cycle. Taken by mouth at a low dose it reaches every follicle, which is why providers often pair the two rather than running either alone.

Dutasteride + Minoxidil

Dutasteride blocks both forms of the DHT-producing enzyme, where finasteride blocks one, so it lowers DHT further. It carries FDA approval only for an enlarged prostate; for hair loss it is prescribed off-label, usually when finasteride has been tried and has not done enough. It stays in the body for months, so it is not a medication to start casually. Minoxidil plays the same follicle-support role as in the first option.

Minoxidil only

Low-dose oral minoxidil on its own, with biotin, vitamin D3 and vitamin K2. Minoxidil carries FDA approval only as a blood-pressure medication at much higher doses and as a topical foam or solution for hair loss. The low oral dose is prescribed off-label for hair loss and is widely used because it reaches the whole scalp without the twice-daily application that topical minoxidil needs. It does not act on DHT, so it suits patients who should not take finasteride or dutasteride, including most women with thinning hair.
